Once a year direct marketing professionals meet for a very special event — the presentation of the prestigious Silver Apple Awards given for 25 years of distinguished service to the New York direct marketing community.

The Direct Marketing Club of New York announces the following recipients of its 2008 Silver Apple Awards for outstanding contributions to the direct marketing industry:

Each year a special Corporate Silver Apple Award is presented to a company that has enthusiastically supported the Club and direct marketing in New York. The 2008 honoree is Penton Media (publishers of DIRECT Magazine).

And a Gold Apple Award to be given to James W. Prendergast for many years of service to the industry.

And our Corporate winner, DIRECT, is one of the industry’s must-read papers of record, helping us all become better at what we do as we navigate the ever-changing direct marketing landscape before us.”

The award recipients were honored at the club’s 24th annual Silver Apple Award gala luncheon on November 7, 2008 at the Hilton New York. Here are the photos from the event:

 

Betty Anne Cooper

Named the 1997 Direct Marketing Woman of the Year by Women in Direct Marketing International, Betty Anne Cooper is Senior Vice President/Director of Strategic Services at MRM Worldwide. Since joining the agency, Ms. Cooper established the agency’s first Strategic Services division. Widely recognized in the direct marketing industry as one of the foremost authorities in targeting consumers at the individual level, Ms. Cooper has been acclaimed for developing innovative segmentation strategies, creating and implementing proprietary marketing products for clients and agencies, and for her negotiation and cost control skills. Her advanced targeting products have been a key element in the success of many of MRM’s blue-chip clients.

Prior to joining MRM Worldwide, Ms. Cooper was SVP, Director of Segmentation, Lists and Research at McCann Direct. Before that, she was Director of Direct Mail Media at Bozell, Jacobs, Kenyon & Eckhardt Direct, a New York advertising agency.

Anyone who knows and works with Betty Anne is aware of her endless contributions to the industry and the DMA. She worked tirelessly and dedicatedly on the List Council for over 10 years. She was the Chairman of the List Council from 1993 to 1995, Chairman of one of the List Days, and also served a two year stint as Public Relations Chairperson. She moved up to the Ethics Policy Committee where she served a six year term. She just finished serving on the DMEF committee where she contributed to a sellout Rising Stars Awards Gala. A widely sought-after speaker and lecturer, Betty Anne often speaks at DMA Conferences. She has lectured on direct marketing at New York University and is a frequent contributor to industry publications as a leading authority in her field. She was the recipient of the prestigious “Forty Under Forty” award and has been named one of the TM 200 Most Influential Direct Marketers by Target Marketing Magazine.

Mention should also be made of Betty Anne’s volunteer activities outside the DMA. She is the founder and CEO of the The Reverend Joseph P. Marron C.M. Foundation, which is dedicated to keeping the infirmed elderly in their own homes. She also volunteers at Saint Joseph’s Seminary in Princeton, NJ with the purpose of providing handicapped facilities in all buildings there. She has built a Habitat for Humanity home in Trenton, NJ and works for the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation and the National Multiple Sclerosis Society.

Somewhere, she finds time to be a cantor in church also.

Ms. Cooper earned her B.A. in English from Chestnut Hill College and has been named the 2007 winner of the College’s Distinguished Achievement Award. She was inducted onto the Board of Directors of the college on October 19, 2008.

 

John F. Papalia, President and CEO of Statlistics.

John entered the direct marketing industry in 1980 after a five-year career in teaching. As an in-house list manager with the Interface Group, the producer of Comdex, which at the time was the world’s largest computer trade show, John was introduced to the New York list brokerage community and began his relationship with the Direct Marketing Club of New York. In 1986, he moved from Massachusetts to New York and became a Vice President at Mal Dunn Associates. He ran the list management division at MDA until 1993. John then became Vice President of List Management at the Walter Karl Company, guiding its list management operation for the next two years.

In 1995, John became a partner at Statlistics, and in 2000, he proudly became an owner. John prides himself on the positive reputation he and his team have established for his company. At Statlistics, clients benefit from a personally tailored plan that combines creative promotions, trade show presence and advertising in various media to provide maximum exposure and top-notch results.

John is actively involved in the direct marketing community and is a current member of the DMA, the DMA List Council, the DMA Business-to-Business Council, the DMA List Leaders, the New York Direct Marketing Club, Southern California Direct Marketing Club, SIPA, and the WFMA.

John is a graduate of the University of Bridgeport and holds a Masters Degree from Boston University. He and his wife Donna live in Westchester County, New York and have three children and two grandsons. He is an avid fan of the Boston Red Sox.

 

Dr. Marjorie Kalter, Clinical Professor, New York University

Dr Kalter brings the dual focus of professor and practitioner to her consulting clients and students. She is Professor and Graduate Program Director at NYU’s Master of Science Program in Integrated Marketing, where she teaches competitive strategy and writing the business plan and is Chair of the Marketing department. Before joining NYU in 2001, she taught direct marketing at Columbia University’s MBA program for 9 years. She was EVP and Account Managing Director at Wunderman (WPP Group) New York and Paris, leading integrated marketing programs for American Express, AT&T, Groupe Danone, Kraft, and Air France. She was awarded the Direct Marketing Educational Foundation’s Outstanding Educator award for 2004.

A frequent speaker at marketing conferences, she is a member of the Direct Marketing Association’s ECHO Committee, a member of the Board of Trustees for the Direct Marketing Educational Foundation, and Chairman of the DMA Hall of Fame Committee. She lives in New York and Paris with her husband, Robert Wasserman, and is the proud mother of Sasha.

 

Jonathan C. Lambert, Chairman of ACTON International

Acton is a full service international list management, list brokerage and direct marketing agency — is a recognized authority on direct marketing and mail production processes. Lambert travels extensively and is active in ACTON’s business acquisition and new product development. He is a frequent speaker and lecturer on various direct marketing related topics around the globe.

Markus Wilhelm has been the CEO of AKS Marketing & Media

For the past 18 months, Markus Wilhelm has been the CEO of AKS Marketing & Media. AKS is a Direct Marketing Consulting Agency that provides both strategic and operational consulting services to its many clients.

Markus is also the Chairman of Solar Tech South, a newly founded solar energy distribution company located in the Raleigh-Durham Research Triangle. Markus has pursued his lifelong interest in the outdoors and environmental causes by recently founding Hampton Green Homes, a cutting-edge, green-technology builder for high end homes in North Carolina and the surrounding area.

For the past 8 years, Markus has been a member of the Board of the Direct Marketing Association, and it’s Chairman in 2006 and 2007. He has also been, for several years, a member of the DMA Executive Committee and a member of the Board of the Direct Marketing Educational Foundation.

From 2001 to 2007 Markus served as the CEO of Bookspan, a Bertelsmann-Time Warner partnership containing most of the major US Book Clubs. He was also the CEO of Doubleday Direct [1994-2001]. In the USA he oversaw the management and growth strategy of more than 40 consumer and professional Book Clubs, the development of a newly formed publishing business, and the launch of a service company for direct marketing. He was a member of several Boards [e.g. Barnes&Noble.com, Syskoplan AG, etc.] and involved in several internet start-ups. Markus was also a member of the board of Bertelsmann Direct for more than a decade, and responsible for all book direct-to-consumer businesses in the USA, Canada, UK, Australia/NZ and Asia.

Markus received his University degree [Diplom-Kaufmann] in 1983 from the University of Passau, Germany. In 1984 he started his direct marketing career at Bertelsmann Direct, and in the fall of 1986 began his career in North America with the acquisition of Doubleday by Bertelsmann AG. From 1988-1990 he was the CEO of Doubleday Canada.

Markus has received several awards and recognitions [Stan Woodruff Award, Ed Mayor Award, etc] and has been a frequent speaker at many direct marketing and publishing events. He lives with his wife Cathy and 3 children in Chapel Hill, North Carolina.

 

Caroline Zimmermann,President and Creative Director of The Zimmermann Agency

Caroline’s company is one of the industry’s oldest independent direct marketing agencies. She inadvertently began her DM career while she was still in college – working in the circulation department of a small magazine to earn tuition money. She so loved the concept of knowing whether or not a promotion worked, that upon graduation, she took a job for the same magazine. She was soon hooked… and even more hooked on writing and designing.

After a short stint at a small agency, Caroline decided to start her own company in 1971. In the ensuing years, clients have benefited from her broad range of knowledge – from new business packages to renewals, gift giving and cold donor programs, billing, e-marketing and more.

Her reputation for delivering winning packages in every category is almost legendary. Just ask clients from Scientific American, Everyday Food, Kiplinger’s Personal Finance, Martha Stewart Living, Travel & Leisure, Food & Wine, Newsweek, Business Week, Glamour, SmartMoney, Vanity Fair, Architectural Digest, Tennis, Yankee, Women’s Day, and her latest, the launch of Food Network Magazine.

Caroline is a frequent speaker at industry events, is the author of numerous articles and has written more than five non-fiction books, including Doubleday’s How to Break into the Media Professions. She is listed in Who’s Who, Women in Finance and is a member of the YWCA’s Academy of Women Achievers.

Anyone who knows Caroline is aware that her contributions don’t stop at the office. She is currently a Trustee, the Deputy Mayor and Police Commissioner of her hometown, Brookville. She is an accomplished Ice Dancer and a Happy Camper – having recently RV-ed her way across country with her husband and two dogs.

 

James W. Prendergast

Jim has been in Direct Marketing for over 53 years, starting with O.E.McIntyre, on Long Island. He began in production, was promoted to Personnel Manager, and then chosen to head up and open their first Midwest plant outside of Chicago. He moved to Account Supervision and came back to New York. He joined Dick Benson, at Benson Stagg and later moved to Hodes-Daniel.

Jim is president of J W Prendergast & Associates, a direct marketing consulting and creative group for over 35 years. The group also does Association Management & Development.

He founded his own agency with no clients and quickly developed an “All Star” list that included: TV Guide; National Geographic Society; Physicians Mutual Life Insurance; GEICO; US West; AAA; Equitable Life; Food & Wine; MacLean Hunter, Ltd; and major NYC banks: Citibank; Manufacturers Hanover; Chemical Bank; Bankers Trust and Chase. In addition, the agency also consulted and created for six full service agencies around the country. In 1987, he co-founded an DM agency in Toronto, KTP – Kerr, Tomlinson & Prendergast – serving Canadian clients and agencies.

He’s been a speaker, seminar giver, panelist, and moderator for organizations across the US and Canada. His group has been recipient of the Caples Award, an Echo Award along with many other DMA and CDMA Creative awards. Jim has twice been past president of the Direct Marketing Club of New York; the Creative Guild; ADMA, the Association of Direct Marketing Agencies. He has received the Silver Apple Award, The DMCNY Leadership Award; The MFSANY Lifetime Achievement Award; The Professional of the Year Award from the DMAW; the DMDNY Education Award; and the MFSA Chapter Achievement Award.

He has helped manage twelve trade associations and clubs in Direct Marketing, Publishing, Mailing, Printing since 1990. He is presently an Executive Director of the MFSANY – the Mailing & Fulfillment Service Association – New York Chapter. He is also a member of the Board of Trustees of La Salle Academy, NYC.

For the past thirty years, he has been teaching and lecturing on Direct Marketing in Metropolitan area colleges. Since 1997, he has been teaching DM at Baruch College.

He holds a BS from Fordham University and a MS from Columbia University.

He is married and has two children, and one super grandson.
